“Picasso. The Stranger”: the unmissable exhibition at Palazzo Cipolla in Rome in 2025
From 27 February to 29 June 2025, Palazzo Cipolla will host the Picasso exhibition. The Stranger, an ambitious project curated by Annie Cohen-Solal with the contribution of Johan Popelard.
Organized by the Rome Foundation in collaboration with Marsilio Arte, the exhibition offers a rich journey of over 100 works, accompanied by historical documents, photographs, letters and videos. Created with the support of the Musée national Picasso-Paris and other prestigious institutions, this exhibition offers an unprecedented focus on the figure of Picasso as a “foreigner”, enriched by works never exhibited before, selected specifically for this Roman stage.
The exhibition follows the life of Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881 and settled in Paris in 1904. Although France was his adopted homeland and the fulcrum of his artistic success, the artist never obtained French citizenship. This immigrant status is the underlying theme of the project, which intertwines Picasso’s aesthetic and political trajectory with his condition as an “outsider”. Particular attention is paid to the spring of 1917, spent by the artist in Rome together with Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie and Serge de Diaghilev, a period that marks a moment of rebirth in his career.
Through Cubist masterpieces and works that reflect Picasso’s complex relationship with France, the exhibition investigates how his identity as a foreigner influenced his artistic revolutions. The exhibition therefore represents an opportunity to rediscover the twentieth century master from a new perspective, highlighting how his vision changed the language of art forever.
