Botero, the exhibition in Rome

The great Colombian artist is the protagonist of a prestigious retrospective, the most complete ever held in Rome, hosted in the rooms of Palazzo Bonaparte.

The painter, sculptor and illustrator originally from Medellìn, who recently passed away, has always been known for his unique and recognizable style, Boterismo, characterized by bright colors and figures with opulent shapes, in which reality is surrounded by a patina of hyper-realistic ambiguity of South American origin.

On display are medium and large works – including paintings, watercolors and sculptures – which celebrate the art of one of the greatest post-war masters: the exuberant roundness of the female universe, between three-dimensional effects and bright colours, the versions of masterpieces of art, including Velázquez’s Menine and Raphael’s Fornarina, the Montefeltro diptych by Piero della Francesca, the bourgeois portraits of Rubens and van Eyck and paintings dedicated to the classic themes of circus and bullfighting in a traditional Hispanic reading.

The exhibition itinerary also includes a room that hosts Botero’s most recent works: delicate works, painted with watercolors on canvas since 2019, the result of technical experimentation and a different, lighter approach to the themes that have always been dear to him .

The exhibition is part of a season dedicated to international art that Palazzo Bonaparte welcomes in 2025 on the occasion of the Jubilee and the 25th anniversary of the birth of Arthemisia.
