Antonio Ligabue, the exhibition in Rome

Autumn 2024 marks the great return of Antonio Ligabue’s art to Rome, a city which, in 1961, gave him his first important solo exhibition which established him among the most important Italian artists of the 20th century.

From 28 September, at the Historical Infantry Museum, the exhibition Antonio Ligabue ‒ The mysteries of a mind, produced by Navigare srl with the patronage of the Lazio Region and the City of Rome, will celebrate the art of the painter and sculptor born in Zurich, with over 60 works from private Italian collections in an exhibition project curated by Micol Di Veroli, Dominique Lora and Vittoria Mainoldi.

The exhibition

The exhibition recounts the artistic journey of Antonio Ligabue through 64 works including sculptures, oil paintings, drawings and drypoints, with the aim of offering a new reading of his work, which frees him from the overused label of Naïf artist, to analyze the his production in light of the biographical data of a complex, original and brilliant personality, and fully show the uniqueness that Ligabue represents in the history of art. With a chronological path and an installation made up of 5 areas: Barnyard animals, Wild animals, Dogs, Forest animals, and Self-portraits, flowers and countryside, the exhibition gives the possibility of analyzing the artist’s work in its evolution, crossed by research and continuous experimental tension, accompanied by a singular emotional intensity, a reflection of his personal struggle for survival and understanding of the world around him.
